New Here! - On Call Session for the first hours after birth - Treasure Coast Birth Photographer

I love documenting Birth Stories. Heck, I wouldn't do it if I didn't. And since becoming a business owner I've taken to the philosophy that if I don't have a HELL YAH feeling about something I don't pursue it. If I don't feel over the moon about my offerings or the work I'm providing for my clients then I'm not giving it my all and speaking with my heart. I'm not that kinda gal. No, ma'am. What I'm sharing with you here definitely fits into the hell yah category. And it gives me goosebumps to share with you. It's something new but so, so awesome.

So.  Even though birth photography is picking up more these days and has become much more prevalent on social media, not everyone is on board for having their own births photographed. I get it. Just because it's a thing doesn't mean it's your thing.

Maybe you're more of a private person. Maybe you're more interested in the final product (um, a squishy and beautiful bundle of joy?!) than the process of birth itself. Maybe all the details of labor and delivery fade in comparison to the details of your baby, freshly born. All of those firsts in the first few hours can pass in a whirlwind. Foot prints, weighing, first time nursing, first skin to skin with another parent, first time meeting siblings. First diaper. First outfit. The list goes on.

And babies change so much in the first few days. They will never look BRAND new again. Not like they do in the first few hours.

This is why I am now offering a session I am calling New Here.

So, what does a New Here session entail?

I will be on-call for you on the month surrounding your due date. Once baby is born I'll come within the first 1-5 hours to document your freshly born baby and all of those firsts. Your new or growing family taking in the wonder of this really real tiny thing that just entered the world. I'll be there for a few hours so everyone can take their time and there's no need to rush.

So if you are considering having your next birth documented and are still on the fence this could be the option for you. You can check out my 10 reasons to hire a birth photographer if that helps, too.  A New Here session costs less than full Birth Story documentation since I'm not there for the hours leading up to the moment of birth. But it does cost more than the newborn sessions I offer simply because of the narrow window of timing. To be there for those first moments with you I'll be on-call and ready to go at a moment's notice any time of the day or night. Just to capture all of those sweet firsts for you and your growing family.

Ebb and Flow Photography - 10 reasons to hire a birth photographer - treasure coast birth photographer - vero beach birth photographer

Birth photography is still a young field of photography. Thankfully, it is picking up momentum and people are becoming more aware of what it is. Even large media outlets, such as the Today Show and the Huffington Post, are helping to bring birth images front and center to the masses that normally would not be exposed to it.

If you are here, you probably already know that birth photography is more than just the crowning image, it is a story. That is why I have always referred to my birth photography packages as BIRTH STORIES.  We, as Professional Birth Photographers, are primarily mothers ourselves so we understand how personal birth can be and we carry that experience with us as we document birth stories as they unfold. So, not unlike selecting a compatible OB/midwife and doula, I understand how important it is to choose a Professional Birth Photographer that you can trust into your sacred birth space.

Over the years I have compiled a list of reasons to hire a Professional Birth Photographer for your special event.

10 reasons to hire a Professional Birth Photographer

1. Your partner and birth team are free to focus entirely on you without the additional task of capturing photographs, especially during the moment of birth. I float around your birth space, moving seamlessly around your birth team. I know when to move and I know when to step out.

2. You and your partner/ support people will be in the photographs.

3. Your photographs will be in focus. They will be taken by a professional who is skilled and experienced with photographing high action and in low light. Who else would you choose to preserve the fleeting first moments after the birth of your new baby means but a Professional Birth Photographer with the tools and experience to do so?

4. This event is one of the most monumental of your life that you can have photographed. Becoming a parent, whether it is for the first or fifth time, is a life-changing event. People spend money to have their wedding photographed, why shouldn't this occasion deserve similar attention?

5. Memory fades. These images will keep the important moments fresh and allow you to see the timeline of your birth.

6. It saves time. You can focus on your baby and leave all the photographing, culling through images, and editing to a professional. I will even print them for you and make a book to tell your birth story so you can spend more time connecting with your new family member.

7. Perspective. Birthing mothers often focus inwardly. Birth photography allows you to see the birth as a whole and from a different perspective.

8. Babies grow fast. All those tiny features that make a newborn a newborn are gone in a blink of an eye. They look different after a week, even a day!

9. Birth Photographers document stories. Not just a few snapshots. It is not just my job to tell your story, it is my passion and an art form I have dedicated myself to.

10. Birth Photographers can capture parts of the story you never see. Family waiting just outside the door, a sibling's first response, a mother's reaction.

And a bonus one: Healing. Traumatic births can break a parent both physically and mentally. Birth photography can help process the events and start the healing process.

Share this with anyone hesitant about birth photography! Or better yet, share it with someone here on the Treasure Coast looking to have their birth documented.

Some people flow in and out of you life like a vapor. Not Jenny. From the moment you meet her, you are pulled into her life, folded into her joy, and just like that you become friends as if you had already been so for all of your lives. She's the kind of person you love having as a friend and was clearly born to be a mother. She's also a doula, something that weaves in and out of her as she cares for her family, her children, her friends.

Ok. Let's just cut to the chase.

I absolutely adore Jenny. (eye heart emogis forevvvvvaaaaa)

I think we had decided that I would photograph her birth even before she was pregnant. So it warmed my heart that she asked me to fill in the roll of doula for her as well.

I got the call early in the afternoon and shimmied right over. Her birth was quick and her husband was a rock, so my first 'doula' gig was rather easy.

The presence of our dear doula friend Alexa from The Oxytocin Emporium (then, Heart 2 Heart Store) was strong. Her birth affirmation temporary tattoos, color-me birth affirmation banners, and beaded bracelets from Jenny's blessingway binding ceremony were all reminders of empowered and well supported birth wherever you looked.

I had picked gardenias for her from the back yard right after checking in with her when I arrived. Their heady floral aroma made the house and the birth room smell like heaven. But as we all know, strong smells don't last long in the presence of a birthing momma. So out they went after not too many surges.

After some private time with hubby we all heard "the sound" from the other room and I came in with the midwives and assistant to Jenny bearing down in a quiet, determined grace. A wrinkle of worry skitted across her forehead but was quickly erased by the words of the midwife, "It's just your baby, it's just your baby."

Speaking again, she said "Does daddy want to catch his baby?" And as he ran around the pool, family poured into the room to join in on the birth of sweet baby Evelyn.

The Placenta Tour given by a true placenta enthusiast! We learned that this marginal insertion of the umbilical cord is called Battledore instertion. Sounds pretty rad to me.  Left to right: mother's side of the placenta (attached to inside of uterus; THAT is the size of the scar it leaves after it is delivered), Battledore insertion shown on baby's side of placenta, and hands spread in the amniotic sac to show where baby lived for 9 months.

Made with love, birthed by a goddess.
Congratulations and welcome Earthside, Evie.

The Home Birth of Elizabeth

Every event or session I am invited to document is such an honor. This is especially the case when it comes to birth stories. The birth space is sacred, so to be allowed into it is unlike any privilege I know.

Jen had been studying hypnobirth for her second home birth and created a calming space in her home to bring her baby girl into the world. Her amazing support team moved harmoniously around her, meeting her every need with hardly a word. And when the time came for Elizabeth to be born, it was a peaceful moment full of joy. From the get go she had her father's face and her mother's gentle temperament.

Welcome to the world, Elizabeth.
