Living on the Land - Off the Grid

Coming down the driveway, surrounded in vines and ferns I felt as if I was slipping into a dream land. This can't be Florida, can it?

This piece of the world IS a dream. It is joy and a labor of love. It is potential, sustainability, and so much more. It is magical. (See here for the first installment of this photo project)

Their trailer is now in its little corner of the cleared plot of land. The solar panels have been installed and converter makes powering the trailer possible. The composting toilet functions. And for the time being, rainwater supplies their needs with a concentrated effort on conservation.

There is a sense of wild and free but also security. It is the way a home should feel.

Downsizing has been a challenge. But, man, Nay did it in style. Seriously she should start her own show on HGTV on trailer conversions.

They did it. They have 360 views of NATURE. HOME. PEACE and TRANQUILITY. And, according to the little girl that lives next door, "there's a lot of shooting stars."

They are living the dream. Congrats on a life sewn with intent, sustainability, love, and, well... magic.

simplicity and sustainablity - building their dreams

My friend, Nay, is focusing on simplicity and driven to live a more sustainable life.

When I met her not that long ago she and her husband had just cleared a bit of land they had bought. Together they are building a tiny home, a garden, ways to use sustainable energy, and a future.

Years ago while my father was still a child, my grandparents did the same thing. They found their peace and quiet in the mountains of California.  They toiled meticulously placing beam after beam of wood. They built a cabin in the woods.  They moved out of the bustle of the city the moment they retired and retreated to that cozy timber frame of a home that love built.  I am drawn to stories like this.  Stories of perseverance, passion, and dreams come true.

While I couldn't be there to watch that cabin unfold onto the mountain side, I can be there to watch this sunny piece of land become a homestead.  And I am honored to have the opportunity to document their story.  These pictures are from my first visit to her land and into her new-to-her camper which will serve as her family's home while they build.  The camper will be getting an interior makeover - already the bedroom has been painted a soothing shade of lavender. The land is still wild and untamed. Roots and brambles jut out of the ground in every direction. But a fire pit and the outlines of a future outdoor yoga platform mark early signs of the wonder and beauty of what is to come.
